Mother’s Day is here and what more do moms want than to spend some quality time together. While this year may not involve a fun mother-daughter/son day out, it can definitely involve y’all whipping up a fun meal together and settling down for a movie marathon! Here is a list of my favourite Bollywood and Hollywood picks, that will leave both of you feeling warm, fuzzy and special.
Bad Moms
A Mother’s Day Movie For Moms.
One of my all time favourites, Bad Moms definitely tops this list in my opinion. Starring Mila Kunis as a stressed and overworked mom, who blows off her responsibilities to hang out with two other mothers, this movie is a 10/10 in terms of entertainment value. Ridiculous, crazy and engaging, this is a comedy that will make you laugh in most parts. It may not be too realistic, but watch it with the right mindset and it’ll keep you smiling.

We Are Family
A Mother’s Day Movie for Family.
A cute Bollywood movie, We are Family is a remake of the Julia Roberts starrer, Stepmom. Revolving around a warm, doting single mother (Kajol) who gets diagnosed with cancer, this movie will surely leave you reaching out for the tissue box. Also in the picture is her husband, and his new girlfriend (played by Kareena Kapoor Khan), with whom the kids have an entertaining love-hate relationship. It highlights various unconventional bonds and is full of drama, emotional moments and sappiness, which make it so endearing.

Brave
A Movie for Mothers and Daughters.
If you and your mom are fans of animated movies, like me, Brave is a great mother-daughter tale. Even though Merida (the protagonist) sees her mother turn into a bear for a bit, their bond is definitely one to watch out for. The emotion between them is remarkably genuine and touching. Overall, if you’re a sucker for Disney movies, this one is definitely a humorous and heartfelt watch.

Mamma Mia!
A Mother’s Day Movie for music-lovers.
A romantic comedy film with ABBA songs, great acting and perfectly timed humour. Every second of Mamma Mia! is filled with charm, dazzle and energy. The shenanigans start when the daughter invites all of her mother’s ex-boyfriends to her wedding, in the hope that one of them is her father. The mother-daughter relationship is tense and yet strong, which makes it so passionate and fun to watch. The acting is phenomenal, with Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan (amongst many other stars) and overall this classic is a must-watch!

Secret Superstar
A Mother’s Day Movie for tear-jerker lovers.
This movie will leave you both crying and laughing and is the perfect mix of bittersweet emotions. Secret Superstar revolves around a talented teenage singer-songwriter living amid domestic abuse, and how her mother goes to extreme lengths to help her pursue her passion. What they have goes beyond a mother-daughter relationship. It is a genuine friendship between two women, divided by the generation gap. Their moments are definitely the high points of the movie, and will leave both you and your mom smiling!

The Kids Are All Right
A Mother’s Day Movie for the unconventional family.
One mom is great, but how about two? That’s what kids Joni and Laser experience in this movie! Their married moms are loving, kind and supportive, but what they want is to reach out to their sperm donor father. The journey thereon is bumpy, and the movie portrays it subtly and beautifully. Funny in some parts, and touching when it needs to be, this movie is full of warmth and insight. It stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Annette Bening and Josh Hutcherson, amongst others.

English Vinglish
A Mother’s Day Movie for rediscovering yourself.
English Vinglish is about Shashi, the protagonist played by Sridevi is your every day, upper-middle-class mother of two. Not only is she a brilliant cook and small-time entrepreneur but also a great wife and mom. But one skill that she lacks is speaking English. This hilarious yet heart-touching tale begins when she joins English classes and makes friends with a fun bunch of people in a land foreign to everything she knows. Full of moments that will make you smile, this movie is beautifully executed and will definitely leave you with a feel-good vibe.

So don’t let this day just pass you by. Cuddle up with your mum (or your child) and end it on this special note.
