Valentine’s day – you can love it or hate it, but you can’t ignore it.
If you’re planning to stay in this Valentine’s day (due to the never-ending pandemic we have found ourselves in) and watch a movie; then we have you covered. V-Day isn’t just for couples. So whether you’re spending it with your friends or family, we have curated the perfect list of Bollywood movies for you to choose from. The best part? It is based on your company for the evening (and in general).
The Honeymooners
If you’re the new couple on the block then this is probably your first Valentine’s day, and you want everything to be perfect. In that case, you should definitely watch Jab We Met and/or Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. Both are rom-coms filled with aww-worthy moments, backed up with great songs (for you and partner to slow dance to). You can even jam to Pappu Can’t Dance, if that’s your vibe.
Galentine Special
When everything goes wrong, we often go right to our gal pals. If you’re planning on spending the day with your girlfriends, you can’t find a better movie than Veere Di Wedding. Even if you’re watching it ironically. This movie will definitely make you realise the power of girl love and make you want to hug your squad a little tighter.

The Old School Romantics
Been with your better half for the longest time? And you want to watch a movie that celebrates an old-school romance, just like yours? Then Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is the best choice for you. The most iconic romantic movie of all times – it will have you reminiscing about your early days with each other. There is no way to go wrong with this. After all, it’s a classic for a reason!

The ‘Friendship >>> Relationship’ Group
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is the perfect choice if you’re planning on spending the day with your friends. It’s a masterpiece that celebrates youth and friendship, something you can definitely toast with your beloved squad.

The On-Again/Off-Again Couple
In a relationship where you both keep breaking up, then patching up? Then you definitely need to watch Hum Tum. This is a very cute movie that will make one realise that a tough journey makes it worth it. That you do eventually end up with the person you’re truly meant to be with. Add cute dialogues and Saif Ali Khan’s trademark goofy humour, and voila! You have a winner.

The Broken Hearts Club
Valentine’s Day can be tough on those going through a heartbreak. Which is why I recommend watching Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. A musical drama, this takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride through the laughs and tears. It truly shows you the (tough but essential) truths about love, heartbreaks and unrequited emotions. It also gives you a break from stalking your ex on Instagram, and crying to ‘Channa Mereya’ instead.

The Contemporary Couple
If you and your significant other fall under this category, there’s a bevvy of options! You could watch Break Ke Baad, a 2010 rom-com about a couple trying their hand at a long-distance relationship. Through this, they deal with issues like commitment, ambition and middle ground. Band Baaja Baaraat is another modern love story about two ambitious wedding planners trying to maintain a professional relationship and a romantic one too. You could even watch Luka Chuppi, about the problems a live-in couple has to face in India, diluted with humour.
The One With The ‘Bros’
You have to watch Dil Chahta Hai and/or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara with your guy gang on Valentine’s Day. Both are cult movies of their time and at the very least will remind you of the Goa trip with your boys. The one that everyone kept planning but never went on.
LoveIsLove
While Bollywood is still behind in giving same-sex couples the representation they deserve, there are two that do them justice. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and/or Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan make heartwarming viewing options with your other half. While showcasing the realistic roadblocks most same-sex couples face in a country like ours, these movies also show how love always wins.
With The FamJam
Planning on spending the day with your family? Choose Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham as the movie for the night. People across all age groups are bound to enjoy it, and it is a good mix of sentiment and laughter. The movie features three couples, each from a different generation, making it easy for everyone to find someone to relate to. So #TellMeHowItWas!
The Non-Believers
Refuse to celebrate Valentine’s Day because you think it’s a capitalist tradition started for no other reason but to build the economy by pandering to those in love? Then Stree is just the movie you need to watch. A brilliantly made horror-comedy, it is as far as you can stray from the romantic genre.

Self Love
Single and not looking to mingle? If you’re one of those people who is taking time out for themselves and taking a break from romantic relationships until you’ve truly achieved what you have to, there are 2 good options. Queen and/or Wake up Sid. The former will make you realize that self-love is the most important kind of love. The latter will show you that love strikes when you’re least expecting it to.
So get some popcorn, a box of tissues and get swept away by the current of all forms of love.
